Look beyond the large age gap, mind you that Temari is three years older, and see that there is a connection between these two. Romantic? Perhaps not, because we all know in Naruto there are no couples there, 'cept for the parents of course. Shikamaru and Temari's relationship, didn't start so clean at first. They weren't friends nor acquainted when they first met, because well, they were opponents fighting for the chuunin title. Yet these two share similar qualities: they're both smart, tactiful with keen analytical skills, but Shikamaru was just better at it.
